A good eyeliner can make or break a look. I bet you know the feeling of disappointment when you try a new eyeliner and it smudges of fades after about an hour.
I ordered the Tony Moly Gel Eyeliner because my favourite beauty bloggers use them a lot and I got curious: Is this product really as good as everyone says?
Tony Moly Black Gel Eyeliner – Pearl Black
I was surprised that I got the actual Eyeliner without any packaging but I was way too happy to receive my eyeliner after a month of waiting to complain.
The Eyeliner itself is really cute and the idea of hiding the brush inside the lid is really convenient and funny. The Gel case itself reminds me a bit of those really expensive aquarelle colours I have always wanted to buy. It looks so fancy.
Macadamia Oil: The macadamia oil seems to be an essential stabiliser for the formula. Also it gives the product longevity, a good thing for those of us who do not throw away everything after half a year.
The anti aging attributes are also worth a mention. Even tough anti aging Eyeliner is not really a thing, I think?
Grapeseed Oil: This ingredient is mostly used in products for people with oily skin because is won’t cause acne. -The actual wording was non-comedogenic-
Here is the full ingredient list for those who are interested. I linked it from the official Tony Moly website.
05 | Pearl Black: Iron Oxides (CI 77499), Trimethylsiloxysilicate, Cyclopentasiloxane, Isododecane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Ceresin, Caprylyl Methicone, Talc, Ultramarines (CI 77007), Silica Silylate, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Propylene Carbonate, Butylparaben, BHT, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Seed Oil
How to use it:
Just coat the brush that comes with the Eyeliner in the gel and draw a line. Use the broad side for a thicker line and just rotate the brush for a thinner, more precise line.
What it claims to do:
- With an easy brush applicator, the eyeliner glides on smoothly and precisely, then quickly dries down to a long-wearing, water-resistant finish.
- Long lasting
- Smudge proof gel eyeliner
What it really does:
When I first applied the Tonymoly Eyeliner I had this “Oh My Goodness” moment you have when you find the perfect product. I swished the brush and the line winged out perfectly.
What you cannot see on the pictures on the Tonymoly website -or on mine for that matter- is that the Gel is actually shimmery. After thinking about it I guess it literally IS Pearl Black. If one had to describe pearl black he or she could just say Tony Moly Eyeliner.
The eyeliner does not shimmer or glitter in an obvious way after being applied but it has a glamorous shine to it. It is kind of matte but with the occasional shine. If you are like me and apply eyeliner in the deep, dark and dank dungeon that is commonly called bathroom, then you will not be able to notice at first but when the sun reflects on the eyeliner, it has a marvellous shimmer – just like diamonds.
Even after having applied the eyeliner for about 16 hours it still looks smoking hot, even if it does fade a bit. Just reapply and you are good to go again.
Con 1: The eyeliner dries really fast, what could be considered a pro as well. I decided to add it to the cons because it dries out in the brush and applying eyeliner gets really tedious.
Con 2: At the end of the day the line fades and smudges a bit. Not too much but this is a honest review so I decided to add this con. From afar nobody will notice the difference but when you take a closer look the smudges are visible.
Con 3: DO NOT, under any circumstances, forget to shut the liner after using it. Yes, yes this is a common negative attribute of gel liner, but this one dries out quicker than you can say Tonymoly.
It’s just the top coat tough, so after some scratching you should be good to go. Still, be careful.
Pro 1: The colour really is stunning. If you are going for a glamorous look or some casual shine I am sure there is no better product than this one.
Pro 2: Some other reviewers write that they aren’t that fond of the applicator that comes with it. I disagree. The brush is smooth and does not hurt or itch when used. The thickness is adjustable to your personal liking without having to buy countless brushes.
Pro 3: The whole product is really easy to maintain. Just wash the brush with some soap and wipe it with a towel. There, you are good to go.
Pro 4: The eyeliner is just brilliant. It goes onto your eyelids like butter and, even tough it can be counted as a con, the gel dries really fast. You won’t have to wait before continuing with the rest of the makeup.
Pro 5: This eyeliner is perfect for tightlining. Better than any pencil liner or any other gel liner I haves used before.
Pro 6: The price-performance ratio is exceptional. In comparison to other products it is worth every cent.
This product really is as good as I hoped it to be. Actually it is way better. I am thinking about buying the brown liner too. I really recommend it.
My first five out of five. I haven’t found a better product yet and I doubt I will any time soon.
My Alchemiin Tip:
Should you find yourself in a hurry, the brush is not clean any you don’t have the time to wait for it to dry do this: Instead of using water or anything use your nails to scratch off the dry leftover eyeliner.
The quick fix if you are in dire need of winging it.
But don’t do this all the time because of the germs. Your eyes could get infected if you don’t clean your brushes regularly.
Until the next review! Love, Eden
