It’s Skin Collagen Nutrition Serum – Review

We all want it. Prettier, firmer, smoother skin. We want our skin so shine and our whole face to glow.
Serum is one of the products that is supposed to achieve all the things we wish for. And I will be diligently checking whether this claim is true or not.

Have you ever had the wish to have prettier skin? I know that I sometimes look into the mirror and think: “Ok, so here I am and my skin is getting dryer and floppier… Ah, what to do?” So I got myself some serum, wanting to find out if this magical formula can help make my skin better. What do you think? Does serum really help or could we use anything else and get the same effects?

The product:

It’s Skin Collagen Nutrition Serum

I always seem to mention It’s Skins great design, but it is just so good that I cannot not mention the wonderful package design. And apparently this is not only my opinion because the Nutrition Serum won the German Design Award Special 2016 and the reddot award 2014 for the best packaging design.

The bottle is made out of quite massive glass which makes the whole serum really heavy and gives it the feeling of a high quality product. We rather think that something with a glass case has a higher value than a product with regular plastic wrapping.

The size I bought is the 40ml product. In comparison to other products with the same amount of product the bottle is big. The colour is a beautiful, warmish orange mixed with beige and brown tones. The bottle in itself is matte and has nice haptics and to contrast that the pump and case are shiny.

Ingredients:

Collagen: Is said to increase the skin’s moisture levels and smooth the skin. Collagen is an amino acid that makes up 30% to the skins protein levels.
Collagen is often used in anti aging products because with time the body’s natural collagen production decreases. This is problematic because collagen is the amino acid that gives our skin its firmness. To counter that we use anti aging products with collagen to provide our skin with everything it needs.

Actually did you know that many lifestyle choices effect the skins collagen production too? Well let’s not call it “choices” per se, but rather occurrences like stress, poor diet or a lack of sport.

Cranberries: The red, tasty fruit is a really good antioxidant, even better than spinach, apples or many other fruits. It contains lots of nutrients that benefit the skin and provide anti-aging effects. It is also said to moisturize and strengthen the skin so for people with oily skin, products with cranberries are beneficial.

If you have an urinary infection – and we all do from time to time and it sucks- drink lots of cranberry juice. It helps a lot and the results are scientifically proven and alchemiin approved. I use this all the time.

Malt: Malt is extracted from germinated Barley, which contains sugars, proteins and salts. It is said to be a nourishing agent for the skin.

I found the full ingredient list on Look Beautiful and copied it down for you.

water, hydrolyzed collagen, glycereth-26, butylene glycol, cyclomethicone, butylene glycol dicaprylate/dicaprate, mangifera indica (mango) seed butter, peg-32, glyceryl polyacrylate, ehthoxydiglycol, peg-20 methyl, glucose sesquistearate, laminaria japonica extract, cetyl alcohol, polysorbate 60, polyacrylate-13, sorbitan oleate, carylyl glycol, polyisobutene, fragrance, methyl glucose sesquistearate, glycerin, ethylhexylglycerin, dimethicone, hydrolyzed malt extract, saussurea involucrata extract, tocopheryl acetate, panthenol, stearic acid, dimethiconol, polysorbate 20, arctostaphylos uva ursi leaf extract, carbomer, triethanolamine, xanthan gum, bht, disodium edta, yellow 6 (ci 15985), red 4 (ci 14700)

How to use it:

The websites instructions instruct you to Apply a sufficient amount of product to your skin and massage it in with gentle, circular motions.

Personally, I would recommend a different way of applying the serum than the instructions you find on the web.
Apply one or two pumps of serum to your pointer and middle finger and then gently spread the serum all over your skin. Instead rubbing or “massaging” it in, pat it lightly and work it into your skin like that. Patting is generally gentler on the skin and I do not know about you, but I feel more awake after a light slap in the face.

I provided both my preferred version and the usual instructions because I want you to be able to compare both methods. Maybe even try out both and then decide which one works better for you.
If you have the time I would be delighted to hear your opinion on applying serum down in the comments. Who knows, maybe you can give me useful advice.

What it claims to do:

  • For dry skin
  • Firming effect
  • Improves the elasticity of the skin
  • Moisturizing
  • Promotes microcirculation
  • Smoothes small wrinkles

What it really does:

This product was a real hassle to review. When I tried it out for the first time I suffered from the consequences for about a week and had to treat my skin with silk gloves all the time as to not anger it further.

About two minutes after applying the Nutrition Serum my skin started to feel strange, somewhat like it is being stretched from different directions at the same time. Then it got dryer and started to burn. That was the moment I decided to go wash my face with water and apply lots of soothing cream.

As it turned out, after testing different products with the serum, that the Missha Oxygen Micro Visible Deep Cleanser I use on a daily basis combined with the Collagen Nutrition Serum makes my skin react in an unpleasant way.
For better testing I switched my cleanser and used the serum every evening. This worked perfectly fine and I had no further problems.

My skin felt a lot smoother and firmer after the second use already and I felt healthier all together. Whenever I touched my face after using It’s Skins serum the skin felt good and thicker than before. But even though my skin felt more elastic it did not feel like this product was moisturiSing. Rather than that, it felt like my skin got dryer at the beginning and then just did not care either way. So the product is not moisturising, but also does not suck the water out of your skin.

Summarised:

The cons:

Con 1: Because the glass is so massive the whole bottle is somewhat heavy. This makes the product very uncomfortable to carry around in a bag. I also don’t feel like I would travel with this serum as it is not only way too heavy but also massive, so it takes up space I do not necessarily have.

Like the Cookie & Hand Cream the serum is a product you put onto your shelf and never remove it ever again. Pretty to admire but not practical.
This may be just me, but I get the feeling that It’s Skin is not necessarily making practicality a priority in their product design. Where normally the phrase “Form Follows Function” is used, their designers seem to do the exact opposite.

Con 2: The smell. Do not misunderstand me, the serum does not stink or anything, no the exact opposite is the case. It has a nice fragrance, but it is so strong that it practically invades the senses and does not leave space for any other impressions.
You get used to it after some time, so do not worry too much. Still, it is really dominant that is why I would recommend everyone, especially those sensitive to scents, to test the product before buying it.

I was feeling a bit sickly once and when I applied the serum to my face the smell made me completely nauseous. I felt so sick I had to wash everything off again. This happened only once but well… Not a good thing to associate with a product that should help your skin and not make you sick.

The pros:

Pro 1: The package design is beautiful. Yes, I count this as a pro because we have to see the product every day, so a beautiful bottle is better than something ugly.

Pro 2: The skin gets smoother and firmer, even after only using the product for a short time. I felt like my skin got a big boost and gets more energized after each use.

Pro 3: The application is really easy. With the practical pump there is no way to get the wrong amount of product and everything stays really clean.

The serum itself also feels natural on the skin and there are no problems when you pat it in. I felt like my face really accepted the product and absorbed most of it readily.

Pro 4: The finish is really pretty. Yes I know that is not something to look out for in a serum but I still felt like the finish is worth a mention this time.

The area the serum is applied on gets a really healthy and subtle glow and just looks beautiful. Highlighter goals.

Conclusion:

If you would ask me to describe this product in one word, it would be somewhere between “Ok…” and “Alright, I guess”
The effects were there and the product did everything it claimed it would – except for being moisturizing – but not to a satisfactory degree. The results were just lacking the power and visibility.

Also – but that is only me – because I had an allergic reaction to it I cannot use it in my daily routine so it has practically no use to me.

It’s Skin Collagen Nutrition Serum gets a friendly two out of five for its performance. I do not regret buying the product but definitely do not feel the urge to get a refill.

My Alchemiin Tip:

Never forget to moisturize after using this serum. After a few hours without moisturizer your skin will get dry, somewhat unpleasant and be angry with you for a few days at least.
If you want to be on the safe side apply a second round of cream after letting the first layer sink in for some time.

I wish you a lovely weekend! Love, Eden
