Laneige Special Care Lip Sleeping Mask | Grapefruit – Review

Who likes the feeling of dry, dead or chapped lips?
We love putting lipstick onto our lips but loathe the fact that these very same lipsticks make our lips dryer than the Sahara desert. So we need some sort of protection in order to repair the damage we did to them. And what better time to do that than overnight while we are asleep.

I have always had problems with my lips. From one day to the other they would get all dry and flaky, swell up and start hurting all over. The skin around my lips started to get red and hurt. I used all kinds of medical products and they never really helped, so I started searching for something that offers some sort of long term results. What I found was Petroleum Jelly or Vaseline.

What about you? Do you also get chapped lips from time to time? And what do you do in order to make your lips smooth and kissable again?

The problem I have with Vaseline is the amount of time it takes to sink in and the sticky feeling it has when you put it on your lips. It also does not merge well with many lipsticks and do not even get me talking about the combination of tints and Petroleum Jelly.
This is how I got into the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. I was searching for the missing piece of my routine and found it in this product.

The product:

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask – Grapefruit

This little thing comes in all kinds of flavours, so you should be able to find your personal favourite. You can choose between Berry, Grapefruit, Apple Lime and Vanilla. Which one of these is, or would be your favourite flavour?

Lately I have not been writing about product packaging a lot, because I do not believe in writing about things that are rather obvious or neater negative or positive. I also strongly believe writing about the things that catch my eye or attract my attention and do not leave my mind after that.

Well, obviously the colour of the tin is cute and does reflect the grapefruit flavour rather accurately. The shape is also cute and small, it fits into every overnight bag which makes this one of the few items I always take with me.
Which does say a lot, because on some of my bad days I would rather risk my skin than carry around all those big bottles of cleanser and whatever. But I never failed to take the Lip Sleeping Mask with me up ’til now.

But the thing that actually caught my eye was the information Laneige provided on the back of their little jar. The way they have structured their information is easy to read – in case you understand Korean I mean – and quite convenient too. Just with one look and without having to look it up in the internet, you can see what kind of a product this is and what it does. Divided into three sections: Benefit, Skin Type and Main Features. I love it.
All of the things that are written there, are included in my review, so read on and find out.

Before listing the full ingredient list, like I tend to do, I want to talk about the two things that are listed as the main features on the little bottle.

Berry Complex: The berry mix Complex™ with ingredients such as raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, blueberry, and gojiberry rich in vitamin C melts dead skin cells from the lips and makes the lips feel smooth and elastic.
Laneige claims it to be rich in vitamin C and anti-oxidants and to act on dry, rough lips. So, I looked into every single fruit listed and I have to admit that they are really good for your skin and health in general. Yeah duh, it is a fruit but still…

The second thing is something Laneige called Moisture Wrap™. Some of the listed ingredients are hydro ion mineral water, evening primrose root extract, and Hunza Apricot extract in the dense beta-glucan moisture film. Which are said to help the ingredients sink into the skin overnight.
Hydro Ion Mineral Water:
One of the best factors of this ingredient is its’ effect on skin damage. The Molecular Hydrogen can help reducing the damage made to UV-induced skin. Is also is a good anti-aging ingredient and found in many anti-aging skincare products.

Evening Primrose Root Extract: The health risks of the Extract are rather low, which is a big plus. It is supposed so soothe dryness and nourish skin while reducing fine lines or wrinkles.
Which is exactly the right ingredient for repairing damaged lips overnight.

Hunza Apricot Extract: Is supposed to supply moisture to the skin and smoothen the skins texture. Besides that, it prevents skin moisture loss and further damage, thus increasing the skins moisture level. It also stops the skin from darkening and through doing that it evens out the skin tone.

As always, I linked the full ingredient list for those who are interested. Laneige provides the ingredient list for all of the colours they offer, which is a pretty awesome thing to do if you ask me.

Diisostearyl Malate, Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Phytosteryl/Isostearyl/Cetyl/Stearyl/Behenyl Dimer Dilinoleate, Hydrogenated C6-14 Olefin Polymers, Polybutene, Microcrystalline Wax, Shea Butter, Synthetic Wax, Candelilla Wax, Sucrose Tetrastearate Triacetate, Hydrogenated Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer, Mica, Aromatics, Astrocaryum murumuru Seed Butter, Dimethicone, Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Polyglyceryl-2 Diisostearate, Dehydroacetic Acid, Polyglyceryl-2 Triisostearate, Methicone, Carnauba Wax, CI 15985, Polyhydroxystearic Acid, CI 15850, Water, Potassium Alginate, Propanediol, Glycerin, Alcohol, Lycium Fruit Extract, Cranberry Fruit Extract, Strawberry Fruit Extract, Raspberry Fruit Extract, Sapindus mukurossi Fruit Extract, Blueberry Fruit Extract,  Rubus chamaemorus Seed Extract, Coffee Extract, Chenopodium quinoa Seed Extract, Magnesium Sulfate, Calcium Chloride, Sodium Hyaluronate, Beta-Glucan, Manganese Sulfate, Zinc Sulfate, Ascorbyl Glucoside

How to use it:

Before going to bed apply a small amount of lip sleeping mask on your lips. You can either use the small spatula or your fingers, whichever you prefer. The product softens the moment it touches your lips and spreads out really easily.

Then you just go to sleep and all of the product will seep into your lips and smoothens them out. In the morning your lips should feel smoother and applying lipsticks gets a lot easier.

 What it claims to do:

  • melts dead skin cells
  • makes the lips feel smooth and elastic during sleep
  • refreshing sweet scent of sugar-preserved grapefruit

What it really does:

Before I go into the results the Lip Sleeping mask has shown, I want to talk a bit more about the smell and texture of the product.
I was kind of expecting a faint grapefruit smell from this Grapefruit swatch but what I got was a smell bomb. You definitely cannot miss the sweet, somewhat grapefruity smell no matter what you do and for some this might be a big minus point. I quite like it but no matter how you put it, the smell is very obvious.
Then there is the taste: I was expecting the Mask to taste just like it smelled – no I did not eat it – you get what I mean, but I was surprised to taste absolutely nothing. Taste wise it is just like Petroleum Jelly.

I do not know about the “melting the dead skin cells” part. I do not know how the Lip Mask should melt down the dead skin cells but I guess this could be true.
When my lips are chapped it bothers me so much that throughout the day I start nibbling on my lips until they are smooth again. I know that I am basically making it worse but this is my nervous habit that I just cannot stop.

The thing that surprised me so much about the Lip Sleeping Mask is that it really works wonders on the lips. The lip products I have tried so far really disappointed me and I was kind of expecting this one not to work again. But I was proven the opposite when I used this for the first time my lips’ condition really improved.
I posted a picture on my Instagram in wich told you that I wanted to try, whether the Lip Mask really helped or not, so I used my absolutely ruined lips as an experiment and instead of using Vaseline like I usually would, I used this and the results were really good. Combined these two products can work real miracles.

The cons:

Con 1: Even though this is definitely the best Lip Product I have ever purchased, Petroleum Jelly is still way better and when I have a really bad emergency, my first thought is not “Laneige” but “Vaseline!”
There is just a small tidbit of improvement this product needs in order to be the best thing I have ever used.

Con 2: The fact that the Sleeping Mask smoothes out after putting it onto the lips, is really nice but this also has some negative effects.
Whenever the temperature is higher than average room temperature or even the same as room temp. the product in the jar will liquify and really creamy in a negative way. This also happens when you use your fingers to apply the product instead of the spatula, so you should consider using this.
I have not gotten around to trying this out, but after I upload this review I will try putting the jar into the refrigerator in order to see whether the mask will harden up or not and how long it should stay inside the cold. I will update it once I got the results.

The pros:

Pro 1: Except for Vaseline, I have never ever used any lip care product that had such high results as this one. And the thing I love most about the Sleeping Mask – and which makes me prefer it over regular Petroleum Jelly – is the wonderful smell and the lightweight feeling of the gel. Vaseline and similar products rarely mix well with any other products and tend to feel blotchy and heavy.
This one is wearable over makeup and you can apply it throughout the day with ease.

Pro 2: The changing density of the product is really nice and the fact that it smoothens out when the Mask comes in contact with your lips is awesome, which makes applying it over lipstick and throughout the day perfect.

Pro 3: I like the smell. When I asked my friends, their opinions were split. Some loved it, some hated it and others didn’t even care but I really adore the sweet, fruity smell of the Lip Sleeping Mask.

Pro 4: It looks really pretty.

Everyone probably says this, but the Laneige Special Care Sleeping Mask is definitely holy grail material! I already fear the day I will run out of this and I have already started thinking about when I should order another one so that I won’t have to spend a day without my favourite lip product next to Vaseline.

There is not much to say but the fact that you should purchase this and see the what I am talking about yourself. There is only so much you can experience from my writing, so I highly recommend you to try out the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask.

My Alchemiin Tip:

Now, when I told you about always carrying this around with me I was not kidding. I always have the sleeping mask in my bag in case I need it.

But this is actually not my real tip this time but the fact that you can also use this as a very natural looking, beautiful lipgloss without having sticky lips or an unnatural shimmer.
I always use this Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask when my focus is on creating a more natural makeup look or having glossy, shiny lips. The benefits of this mask over a regular Lipgloss are distinctive:

When you apply lipgloss, the shine is very obvious and everyone notices that you are using lipgloss. With the Mask this shine is more subtle and watery, like you just wet your lips with a few droplets of water.

Like you probably already know, the fact that Gloss is so sticky, is really annoying. I always have my hair sticking on my lips and drinking is just an awful hassle. Even though the Sleeping Mask is sticky and a bit annoying, the negative effects are definitely not as noticeable.

Then there is also the fact that the Lip Sleeping Mask is a care product and will help keeping your lips smooth and firm not only over night but also throughout the day when you are out and about doing your stuff.

The only thing you need to do is put on a thin layer of product onto your lips after doing your regular makeup routine and then you are good to gor for a few hours. After that you night want to touch up on the products you used every few hours like you would always do.

I hope by the time I am uploading this, I have gotten over my cold but either way I hope you enjoy my review and I am always looking forward to hearing from you.

Love, Eden.

I very rarely get chapped lips, but this is still a product I would love to use. I own some jelly lip masks, which honestly don’t even do much, they just look fun hahaha 😀 To prevent chapped lips I just apply a thick layer of my nivea lip butter, and in the morning just use a soft tootbrush and lightly brush it on my lips 🙂

I can really recommend it. All of my beauty-loving friends borrow it whenever I carry it with me – which means all the time :’) – and I always wanted to buy some jelly lip masks for the exact same reason. They look hilarious!
I used Nivea lip butter for some time too, but the results don’t even come close to petroleum jelly or the lip sleeping mask. You should definitely give one of the two a shot. Actually I do the toothbrush thing too from tome to time. 🙂 I soften the bristles further with some warm water

I’ve been planning to get this one but I’ve tried a lot of lip products and they just didn’t really work that well for me, (except L’occitane’s) so I’m kinda scared 😅 Looks like I’m finally buying this one after all these time 😆

You definitely should! And I know the feeling of being scared, I never want to waste my money or get my hopes up only to get disappointed later on :/ But this one is really lovely ❤ Have you used petroleum jelly before? It`s a miracle worker

Uh that sounds awful. When I moved to Japan my body and skin reacted kind of strangely to some of my favourite products and I had to throw them out… I wonder if there is something that makes our bodies react differently? 🤔
