Pyunkang Yul | Essence Toner – Review

1

We use all kinds of correctors to conceal the imperfections our skin might or might not have. But concealing is no permanent solution. Rather than that, we should focus on preventing those things we wish to conceal through skincare.

I do not know if it is only me, but I was really startled at first, when I read the name of the product. “Essence Toner” I know Essences, and I know Toners, but I did not know the exact purpose of a so called Essence Toner.
What do you normally use? Essence, Toner, both or an Essence-Toner? I would like to hear your personal favourite skincare product, so feel free to tell me down in the comments.

But I heard lots of good things about Pyunkang Yul and so I decided to give this product a try.

The product:

Pyunkang Yul | Essence Toner

Before we start the review I thought it may be helpful to actually talk about the difference between essences and toners:

The Toner is used after cleansing and it helps and prepare the skin for the moisturiser. You can find all kinds of toners with all kinds of names like “refresher” for every skin type. You just have to be patient and try some toners until you find the right one.

The Essence is considered one of the most important parts of the skincare routine. The primary goal of Essence is helping hydration and in addition it increases cell turnover.

Ingredients:

When I first looked at the ingredient list I thought I misread something, but there really are only 8 things included in the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner.

This is also the reason I researched the brand a bit and decided to add brand info for the first time.
Pyunkang Yul was developed by the Pyunkang Oriental Medicine in Korea. In favour of ingredients that are the most beneficial to the skin, they abandoned ingredients whose sole purpose is texture or scent.
They claim that each product they select is the safest and most gentle for the skin.

Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract: Astragalus is a Chinese root that has been used in Chinese medicine for some time.

It is rated as an fabulous ingredient and has anti inflammatory and immune-system boosting properties. In addition to these, it has some anti-aging qualities that base on the fact that Astragalus has qualities that increase the body’s ability to resist the damaging effects of stress – called “adaptogenic qualities” –

I would also like to mention that not all claims have been scientifically proven just yet but everyones expectations are high.

2-Hexanediol: Is non-sensitising, which means that is not meant to give you breakouts, worsen the results of dry skin or have any negative effects on your health or skin.
It is also an synthetic preservative, which is used in cosmetics to prevent any form of contamination.

Butylene Glycol: A lightweight texture enhancer that is often used in cosmetics as it was tested and deemed as safe.

That is the shortest ingredient list I have ever used in a review. Linked from Oholly.com

Astragalus Membranaceus Root Extract, 1,2-Hexanediol, Butylene Glycol, Bis-PEG-18 Methyl Ether Dimethyl Silane, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Carbomer, Arginine

How to use it:

The official instructions advice you to dampen a cotton ball with toner and with that wipe your face.
I would like to disagree.

When I used a cotton pad to apply the toner I needed a lot of product to get the pad soaked and even more to get the right amount of Essence onto my skin. It just feels like such a waste of good product and money to throw away all that essence that is left within the cotton pad.

I would recommend dripping a small amount of the Essence onto your fingers and then gently tab it onto your face starting from the neck. Instead of putting all of the Essence onto your hands in one go, use one drop per fingertip and spread it onto your face. Simply repeat this process until your whole face is dampened completely.

This way, the product won’t be wasted and there will be no mess with any excess Essence. Also, just for your information, I use six drops to get my whole face moisturised. You guys know that I have a small face, but my recommendation is three to four drops for each half of the face.

 What it claims to do:

  • ingenious, intensely hydrating formula
  • delivers nutrient-filled moisture deliverer
  • 91.3% of this toner is milk vecht root extract
  • With the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, nutrient-boosting properties
  • quick absorbing gel-type toner quickly
  • hydrating and strengthening
  • fragrance, dye and irritant free

What it really does:

I was a bit worried about the dispenser, because I had the fear of the fluid just dripping down my fingers, but that is not the case with the Pyunkang Yul bottle. Even when turning the bottle upside down, only a few drops will escape the bottle. Just enough to sufficiently dampen your face.

The Essence-Toner applies quite smoothly and if you do not apply a humungous amount, there will be no dripping down your face. It is fast drying too, so it is a perfect part of a routine for people who do not have much time in the mornings or get home really late.

After about five minutes the Essence Toner does feel a bit tight but this feeling goes away if you wait another minute or just gently tap your face. After that the skin feels tight and healthy but not necessarily hydrated. But when you use your hands you can feel that your skin is smoother and more moisturised.

This feeling does not stay the whole day, but even after 24-hours you can still feel the positive effects the Essence Toner has on the skin and everything feels more smooth.

Summarised:

The cons:

Con 1: After the Essence Toner dried down, it feels a bit tight and uncomfortable. As mentioned before, you can easily get rid of that by waiting or tapping the face. But this is something I should mention as a con.

The pros:

Pro 1: The amount of product and the amount you need for perfect application is really good. The 200ml flask will last you for a long time and you won’t have to feel bad about using it every morning and evening and sometimes in between.

Actually I started using this one whenever I am not wearing makeup and feel like toughing up un my skincare just because. It feels so nice and refreshing.

Pro 2: Your skin will feel so smooth and healthy after about a week of using this Essence Toner, even over people will notice the smoothness after a while.

Pro 3: Just like Pyunkang Yul promises, the product is lightweight and does not have an unpleasant smell. It is easy to apply and after letting it sink in there are no lingering traces of the Toner.

Conclusion:

I do not see any negative aspects of this products, though I would not consider it a holy grail. I love it, but I did not get the “oh my goodness” feeling after using it. With some product it happens, and with some it just does not.
Just like meeting a boy or a girl: Sometimes it clicks, sometimes it doesn’t, but that does not mean you can strike up a wonderful friendship.

5 <3

Even though the Pyunkang Yul Essence Toner is no Holy Grail, I am in love with it and use it every single day. A product that convinces me of using it regularly deserves a five out of five.

Authors Note: I changed my mind. I have been using the Essence Toner for a few months now and cannot live without it. I will cry once I run out and it is Holy Grail material. It took me longer than usual to fully appreciate the “Holy-Grailness” of this product but it definitely is one. – 26th of February 2018

My Alchemiin Tip:

You never know what kind of reaction your skin might have to a new product, so it would be best to take precautions.
Instead of applying the product to your full face the first time around, do a small patch test on a small a smaller are first.

Should you be prone to breakouts, put a small amount of product on your cheek area close to the nose, or your chin. These areas have more oil glands and pores.

If you do not like to risk a breakout on your face – like me – you can also use your cubital fossa, which is the triangular area also known as the elbow pit. The skin there is sensitive and should you be allergic to something, the skin there will react to the product.
